Theme WRI's sixth annual Sustainable
Enterprise Summit showcased leading corporations and strategic partnerships
that transform vague concepts of sustainability into concrete actions.
The conference focused specifically on actions that support new "green"
markets and that train business leaders to manage for sustainability.
WRI introduced a new feature to the structure of this year's Summit; many
of the sessions were supplemented by tools sessions that were designed
to equip participants with "take-home" actionable strategies
for implementing sustainability in their corporations.

Civil society has a growing influence on business; well-organized,
media- savvy NGOs can mount campaigns that damage corporate reputation
and competitive positioning. Businesses must therefore engage stakeholders
to identify and address environmental and social concerns before
they become major issues. Active engagement with key stakeholders
can also help drive product and service innovation, reduce legal
liabilities, improve business strategy, and ultimately protect the
license to operate. This session will explore how companies have
worked with stakeholders to address environmental challenges. Representatives
will talk about the successes, failures, and the overall value of
engagement. Panelists will also offer tools for other companies
thinking about designing effective stakeholder engagement models.
