Synopsis
Seeks to encourage companies to gain the additional benefit of climate and air quality protection as they initiate and expand telework programs.
Transport is the fastest growing source of carbon dioxide emissions. Commute miles are 25% of U.S. personal miles driven. Business travel accounts for 43% of U.S. annual air passenger miles. Telework is one way to turn the trends downward. At least a dozen electronics, computer, and telecommunications companies have ambitious telecommuting programs and five have formal programs that substitute electronic communication for some business travel. Although air pollution regulations spurred early telecommuting programs, the leading reasons for establishing telework at most digital companies are now recruiting and retaining staff by improving quality of life and cost savings from reduced office space and fewer air tickets. This guide seeks to encourage companies to gain the additional benefit of climate and air quality protection as they initiate and expand telework programs.
