Soil porosity . A polygon database on soil type (UN Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), World Soil Database, 1995) provided soil texture and porosity attributes. Soil porosity is the soil characteristic used in calculations because of its relationship with infiltration capacity of the soil. (5000-m resolution)
Purpose:
This dataset was developed for the Reefs at Risk Caribbean project (World Resources Institute, 2004 <http://reefsatrisk.wri.org>) analysis of sedimentation from land-based sources.

Soil ramp was derived from Soils Classification for North and South America (FAO). A lookup table was used to derive the values below from the FAO soils data "Texture" value. Originally used to derive Porosity, these values (11,12,13,14,16) were assigned to give the soil ramp more weight in the Reefs at Risk Caribbean watershed analysis.
