Description:
Abstract:
This dataset is an inventory of Marine Protected Areas in the Wider Caribbean region with their point locations. This list was developed under the Reefs at Risk Caribbean project and relied on literature and other studies. Gathering information on MPAs across the region is very difficult and, as such, this list does not pertain to be exhaustive or complete. Additionally, as the dataset was developed for the purpose of gaining a better understanding of protection afforded coral reefs - there may be some selective bias towards those directly relevant to coral reefs (for example, no protected turtle nesting beaches are in the dataset). However, at the time of production of this inventory, spatial information and assessment of management effectiveness - no other data source exists. Future work in this area lies with the CaMPAM initiative (<http://www.gcfi.org/campam/CaMPAM.htm>).
Purpose:
This dataset was developed for the Reefs at Risk Caribbean project to gain a better understanding of the actual protection afforded reefs in the region.

Process_Description:
Inventory of Marine Protected Areas in the Wider Caribbean from various literature sources (Wilkinson, 1998, 2000 and 2002)) and previous studies (Kelleher, 1995; Mascia, 2000
Process_Step:
Process_Description:
Identify exisiting spatial coverage of MPAs. The dataset includes an attribute reflecting whether or not the polygon (boundary information) is available within the polygon dataset and the source of that data. (if polygon not available, point location with size). (see attribute poly_sourc for specific source). the polygon data is available under the accompanying dataset "Caribbean Marine Protected Areas and managment effectiveness (polygon data only)."

Process_Step:
Process_Description:
Assessment of management effectiveness for each MPA. Because compiling detailed information on a region-wide basis is very difficult, the MPAs were assessed on only four broad criteria: existence of management activity, existence of a management plan, availability of resources, and extent of enforcement. Combined, these criteria were used to generate a simple measure of management effectiveness.
