• 2001 October 3. "WRI urges Desertification Conference to take a new look at world's drylands". WRI urged participants to the United Nations Convention to Combat Desertification (UNCCD) to take a wider view of the world's drylands as important for maintaining key ecosystem goods and services that sustain human livelihood.

• 2001 April 17. "Report warns of growing destruction of world's coastal areas". Report warns that if the planet's coastal zone continues to be extensively modified or destroyed, its capacity to provide fish, protect homes and businesses, reduce pollution and erosion, and sustain biological diversity will be gravely endangered.

• 2001 February 14. "New study reveals that environmental damage threatens future world food production". World food production is at risk from farming methods that have degraded soils, parched aquifers, polluted waters, and caused the loss of animal and plant species.

Forest areas in developed countries continue to increase slightly, while clearance for agriculture, development, and logging in developing countries are reducing their forests by at least 140,000 square kilometers yearly.
