GHG Protocol Senior Associate

The Greenhouse Gas Protocol at the World Resources Institute is looking for a Senior Associate to manage the development of new guidelines for supply chain and product lifecycle greenhouse gas accounting. The Senior Associate will serve as a project manager and work closely with the director and team members in overseeing the development and implementation of the new product life cycle and supply chain accounting standard. The GHG Protocol (www.ghgprotocol.org) is the most widely used international accounting tool for government and business leaders to understand, quantify, and manage greenhouse gas emissions. The GHG Protocol, a decade-long partnership between the World Resources Institute and the World Business Council for Sustainable Development, works with businesses, governments, and environmental groups around the world to build a new generation of credible and effective programs for tackling climate change. The new GHG Protocol product/supply chain guidelines will include both product-level life cycle accounting and corporate-level scope 3 accounting. The project is expected to pose both technical challenges—in developing guidelines on many technical accounting issues, building upon existing life cycle and GHG Protocol standards—as well as convening challenges, in building strategic partnerships and promoting synergies between relevant programs and initiatives, and in convening a broad, inclusive, international stakeholder process to develop the new standard. The ideal candidate for this position will have extensive knowledge and familiarity with the GHG Protocol, greenhouse gas accounting, and life cycle assessment, as well as experience convening stakeholder groups.

Responsibilities

Leadership, Strategy, and Team Management: Create a shared vision among the team members and partners; develop and coordinate the project strategy and workplan to design the new standards; and ensure effective team work and outcomes.

Stakeholder Convening: Establish and manage a broad, multi-stakeholder process to develop the new standards. This will involve coordinating and supporting a comprehensive, global multi-stakeholder group of government, industry, academic, and NGO partners. The Senior Associate will also facilitate and aid one or more individual technical working groups on specific technical issues.

Research and Analysis: Conduct technical analysis on product life cycle and supply chain GHG accounting topics and themes; integrate life cycle and GHG Protocol accounting methods; advance knowledge and expertise on life cycle GHG accounting issues with analytical and scientific perspectives and white papers; and provide technical inputs to the working group process to develop the new standard.

Outreach and Communications: Identify key actors and opportunities for promoting the new GHG Protocol standard; give presentations at conferences, workshops and other events related to supply chain GHG management and carbon footprinting; conduct media interviews, as necessary; and interact with government officials, industry representatives and others in the environmental community.

Budgeting and Fundraising: Plan, cultivate and secure long-term funding; build and maintain relationships with corporate and other donors and prospective donors; identify fundraising opportunities; draft funding proposals for corporate donors, private foundations, government agencies, and bilateral donors; manage grants, project budgets, and reports to funders on an ongoing basis.

Project Management: Ensure successful completion of the project goals and objectives within the resources and timeline as planned.
