The World Resources Institute has an opening for a Research Analyst in its Climate & Energy Program. The position supports WRI’s partnerships with Chinese government, university, business and nongovernmental partners and is central to WRI’s work on global agreements, as well as developing country participation. WRI has growing research and programmatic activities in China. The research analyst will work with WRI’s climate program and support the China-based climate director to advance policy research. Research activities will include independent research tasks and collaborative research with leading universities and research institutes in China. In addition to the research tasks, the analyst will be responsible for publishing written work in English and Chinese on topics that could include clean coal, renewable energy, climate change policy, and issues related to global negotiations. The analyst will also provide research support to other WRI climate projects and will produce work for a WRI Chinese website.

Responsibilities

• Work with WRI’s research partners to undertake climate change-related research projects.
• Conduct independent and collaborative research on climate change policy both about China and regarding China in international negotiations.
• Prepare research briefs and publish reports in Chinese and English.
• Prepare short articles and information for the WRI Chinese-language website.
• Monitor and report on Chinese climate research and policy developments to the Climate and Energy team and prepare larger policy briefs when appropriate.
• Prepare both written and oral presentations, policy briefs and backgrounders on the China climate team’s work for use in outreach.
• Work closely with WRI Washington on joint research and provide China-specific research support for global research projects.
• Support the WRI China Visiting Fellows program; assisting those traveling to the US and those from WRI working on climate change research in China.
• Contribute to and critique WRI’s peer-reviewed publications, especially involving China and/or international climate change issues.
• Provide general project assistance, including meeting preparation and administrative tasks.
• Support the China team managers with budgeting and internal/external communications activities.
• Participate in WRI’s broader climate change activities including other U.S. and international projects and strategies at the direction of the project managers.

Qualifications

• Preferably 2-3 years of professional work experience related to energy, environment or climate change policy.
• Master’s degree preferred in policy, business, economics, science or engineering. A Master’s degree may substitute for 2 years of professional work experience.
• Demonstrated knowledge of international climate change and Chinese energy issues.
• Excellent research, writing, data analysis and communications skills.
• Fluent native-level Mandarin Chinese speaking and writing skills.
• Excellent English communications skills both spoken and written.
• Ability to use Microsoft Word, Excel, Outlook in both English and Chinese, knowledge of web-based applications.
• Must be self-motivated with an ability to juggle multiple priorities, handle assignments independently, and work under tight deadlines.
