Associate I

EMBARQ Istanbul is seeking a candidate to fill an ASSOCIATE I position whose principal responsibilities will be to play a key managerial role in planning and implementing environment projects in Turkey.

Responsibilities

Management and People:

  • Close collaboration with Senior Researchers at EMBARQ (in Washington) and its network of Centers (in different countries such as CTS-Mexico, CTS-Brazil, etc.).
  • Work with international as well as Turkish public and private sector, academia, NGO stakeholders to forge partnerships, policies and projects that will ensure the success of EMBARQ’s initiatives and missions
  • Identify and lead relevant research for EMBARQ/WRI on emerging trends and best practices in the environment and sustainable transport sector and on project-specific issues.
  • Manage local environment projects and teams, including work planning and implementation, to deliver EMBARQ mission objectives.

Impact

  • Conduct literature review and data collection, mainly from the internet, electronic journals, media, publications, visiting experts and professors. Interact with external experts to obtain additional information and data.
  • Identify and lead relevant research for EMBARQ/WRI on emerging trends and best practices in the environment and sustainable transport sector and on project-specific issues, such as in vehicle emissions, ambient air quality and health impact, fuel economy, land policy, traffic safety and traffic policy measures, and other.
  • Identify ways to apply acquired knowledge to existing and future EMBARQ projects in Turkey.
  • Create a Turkish transport database for EMBARQ focusing on fuel quality, fuel economy, fuel costs, vehicle emissions regulations, ambient air quality, population growth rates, etc.
  • Create a quantitative information report focusing on environmental laws, regulations and new policies.

Future Impact

  • Work with international as well as Turkish public and private sector, academia, NGO stakeholders to forge partnerships, policies and projects that will ensure the success of EMBARQ’s initiatives and missions.
  • Explore potential opportunities for expansion of EMBARQ’s activities in Turkey.
  • Explore ways to influence cities to increase environmental awareness as well as start thinking about sustainable transport.

Qualifications

The ideal candidate will have a

  • B.S. or M.S. (preferred) degree or candidate to a degree in environment science or engineering. Knowledge of transportation issues is a plus.
  • Demonstrated ability to manage or coordinate projects. Ability to liaise with government authorities, non-government organizations and private sector entities is a plus.
  • Flexible individual who can work independently and with little supervision
  • Strong and demonstrable quantitative, research, analytical and communications skills.
  • Fluency in both written and spoken Turkish and English.
  • Applicants must have valid permits to work in Turkey.
